Welcome from the Middle School Principal

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year. It is with great joy and enthusiasm that I return as Interim Middle and Senior School Principal. Many of you will know that I retired as Middle School Principal in June 2025 after a 33-year career in education, including 23 years at The York School. This year, I am delighted to step into an expanded role and continue advancing our innovative approach to teaching and learning alongside a caring and dedicated faculty.

I have regularly spoken about the bumpy road that middle school students experience. It is a time of significant change for students physically, emotionally and socially. Supporting them through this change are a team of people, including their homeroom teacher, learning strategist, social worker and their specialist teachers who are attuned to the developmental needs of this age and stage. Students are taught social-emotional regulational skills to navigate this stage.

Our approach to learning is guided by the IB philosophy and framework, which aims to develop caring, inquisitive, and engaged global citizens. Inquiry is at the heart of this approach, with students actively involved in their learning as they are taught learning how to learn skills so they can engage with the curriculum.

Complementing our academic program are rich opportunities in outdoor education, experiential learning, athletics, the arts, and student leadership. Learning in and out of the classroom is engaging, relevant and connected.

This handbook provides essential information to help you prepare for the start of the school year in September. I look forward to getting to know all of our students and supporting their learning and achievements in the upcoming school year.

Sincerely,
Helen Gin
Interim Middle and Senior School Principal
